But first the Austin City Council must approve a plan to consolidate the department with three other groups.

Monday, the public safety task force approved a plan to consolidate Austin police with airport, parks police and city marshals.

The plan will make all three groups part of the Austin Police Department.

The council's final approval is set for Thursday.

The plan would cost the city close to $1 million a year for added training programs required for the additional three agencies.
