  • ( ) Average rents drop in 11 apartment complexes

    More average apartment rental rates decreased than increased in the last year, according to The Business Journal's 2008 apartment communities list.

    On the list, which ranks Northeast Florida's 50 largest apartment communities according to the number of units, 11 communities experienced a drop in average rents for two bedroom/two bath apartments compared to 2007 while eight communities increased average rates for such units.

    The biggest drop in rent was the starting average of $753 at Westland Park apartments on Collins Road, down 14.4 percent from the starting average of $880 in 2007.

    Tom Grimes, senior vice president and director of property management operations at Mid-America Apartment Communities (NYSE: MAA), said he is not surprised by the drop in average rents at some communities. More>>

  • ( ) San Diegans Named On List Of Tax Debtors

    Ten San Diegans are on a list of tax debtors that officials hope to shame into paying their bills.

    The California Franchise Tax Board publishes an annual list of the top 250 taxpayers with income tax debts that exceed $100,000, including individuals and companies. The latest list went online last month and listed several San Diegans who owed more than $2 million.

    Among those topping the list is Jeffry Howard, who owes $4.6 million personal income taxes. Howard is a Del Mar businessman who reportedly sailed off in his yacht to the Bahamas, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. . More>>
